Secret 7 Vinyl Cover for Laura Marling

This year I’ve taken part in Secret 7 (http://www.secret-7.com/). The sale of the vinyls was a huge success with the majority selling out in an hour and half – crazy! It also now means I can show the final artwork.

I decided to do my cover for Laura Marling’s ‘The Beast’ which is beautiful poem of sorts. I know the usual type and style associated with Marling and wanted to do the opposite – try and break what people would expect. And so I tried a bit of a lo-poly illustration style which is bright and colourful. It’s meant to resemble some sort of tribal mask.

You can see my original sketch below along with the final.

So with a new album that came out in Sept 2012 to gig with, I was asked by the band Muse to design their backstage passes for their World Tour which showcased ‘The 2nd Law’. I worked with their management, touring managers as well as direct input from Dom Howard (the bands drummer) regarding the designs that they would have to see for their tours which normally last over a year.

These passes are used by the Band, VIPs, all staff working on the tour, guests – pretty much everyone involved with the gigs. These also include photo pit passes for the press and media. There was also a separate batch I custom designed for their iTunes Festival gig at the Roundhouse.

For obvious security reasons I can’t show you what they look like but I did see them briefly feature in a video from one of their American support acts ‘Dead Sara’. Check out their backstage video below:

As I did the illustrations for the exhibition they asked if I could supply a pair of custom doodled pair of VANS for a competition they ran for the year which was nationwide.

The style of the doodles was a step back from what I normally do due to custom requests for what was to be doodled!

Secret 7’’ combines music and art for a good cause. They take seven tracks from seven of the best-known bands around and press each of those tracks 100 times to vinyl then get creatives from around the world to interpret artwork in their own style for of one of the 7 tracks; resulting in a one-of-a-kind sleeve for every single one. These are then exhibited for a week, then on Record Store Day (April 20) you can get your hands on one, or more, for £40 apiece.

I was lucky enough to get chosen from the Talenthouse selection process and have my design printed (for a Laura Marling track). The launch night for the talenhouse artists was on Friday 12th. It was a fantastic night, viewing the rest of the work out there which ranged from a couple bonking on a bed to a playable ‘vinyl cover’ guitar. Interesting mix to say the least! I was proper chuffed to be in the exhibition alongside some of the artists who I admire greatly such as Peter Fowler and Von. The sale is on April 20th, all proceeds going towards Art Against Knives charity.

Due to the ‘Secret’ aspect of the show and the fact it is still running I can’t post which my cover is, but I can include photos that have it in it…

You can view a panoramic that I quickly put together if you cant make it down!

So in February 2013 I worked at the famous ‘The Mill’ in London for a couple of weeks on a few projects. The Mill is an award winning studio having won an Oscar as well as working on a vast array of famous films and tv shows doing visual effects and filming. They probably have the most impressive portfolio of a studio, so it was great that I was given the chance to dip myself into this new world. I learnt a lot from my brief time and it was an ace experience to see how the inner workings of such a studio runs.

Below is part of a research illustration I came up with for one of the projects.

The style of music is somewhat reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine which contains a wall of sound vibe.

After listening to the song we discussed possible ideas and influences such as The White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’ video and recent work rom Tame Impala – a sort of Lo-fi, psychedelic feel.

We filmed it all in one day using an old VHS video camcorder and put it together from there.

Check out his music here: http://hotglass.bandcamp.com/

And a quick mention that my work for Museum of London is now being used as a highlight to promote my old University course at London College of Communication! http://www.lcc.arts.ac.uk/courses/courses-by-level/ba-illustration-and-visual-media/

Imaginary Worlds Update:

I’m also currently working on an interactive way of display my large Imaginary Worlds piece which will allow you to explore the artwork up close and personal online!

Covered Records website:

I was asked to quickly design and build a website for a new venture from Pulled Apart by Horses called ‘Covered Records’. Which is basically the idea that two bands record each others tracks in their own style. Great idea, and the first involved PABH with Blood Red Shoes. The basic website was designed and built in a few hours and includes a mobile version.

Check it out: http://coveredrecords.co.uk/

I’ve been saying for a while but never getting round to it that I would offer prints and such so this will house whatever I come up with.

At the moment I’m using Society6 to print and ship the products. It’s a US company however they do deliver to the UK. All products are made with high quality materials such as American Apparel T-Shirts!

The designs for sale at the moment is a brand new illustration part of my ongoing ‘Imaginary World’ project. On offer there are iPhone covers, Art Prints, Cushion Covers, T-Shirts, Hoodies etc.

I will be introducing new prints fairly regularly hopefully and I have a small screenprint run of this design coming soon, so stay tuned for that. In the mean time check out the Shop.

Every year the band Muse give their fans a christmas gift via their official website and fan mailing list. Over the years its been mainly audio tracks or live videos/360 videos. For 2012 they wanted to innovate and I was asked by their management to design and create the present. The brief was for fans to ‘build their own pop-up muse stage’ – recreate the tour stage Muse used on their recent european tour for The 2nd Law. (Link showing a selection of fan stages is at the bottom of this post). Tour stage pictured below:

It was my responsibility to first come up with how to build it out of paper – lots of trial and error involved and then design the actual visuals for each. Muse management also were keen to offer multiple ‘skins’ of stage visuals – due to time we could only get two version complete. The final instructions were delivered as PDFS with nets that were to be cut out and glued into shape.

Muse are also well known for having been cryptic with their fans, offering ‘hidden’ surprises. This was no exception, and ‘hidden’ within the stage designs was a link to two live audio tracks.

Also every year I’ve designed the image to represent the ‘gift’ which is used on the official website and sent to the fans via the muse newsletter. This years it was adapted to represent the use of TV screens in the new tour staging.

3D visuals of the 2nd Law pop-up stage using the real final artwork.

Popup muse stage without graphics:

To download/view the finals PDFs you must be a member of http://muse.mu and it will soon be available in the members section.

The reaction from the fans was pretty good and a fair few attempted to build the stage. You can view some of the reactions and built stages on this dedicated page I’ve put together:

The original design was in black and white on brown paper however with some changes from the client we added more colour and visual references.

For now I’m, for some reason, illustrating moomins – not entirely sure why, mainly as a character exercise!

Regular moomin:

Recently a friend asked if I could help make a music video for his band. He gave me the brief and the kind of style he wanted which was a bit psychedelic, bit retro. I wanted to make the video as authentic as possible so I purchased an old 70′s 8mm video camera. (Ilford/elmo zoom 8-cz camcorder). The battery compartments were all rusted and didnt work but with a bit of TLC I brought it back to life – I look forward to seeing what we can come up with.

Working on some recent projects has prompted me to learn more motion graphics/after effects mainly looking into controlling visuals with audio as well playing with particles. A couple of tests below show what I’ve been messing about with.

Following on from these experiments I worked with a video of my head and transformed it into particles and seeing what I could come up with. (Very similar to the effect used in Radiohead’s – ‘House of Cards’ video) As a result of this I created some artwork for a friend’s band ‘Hot Glass’. The beauty of working this way means not only can you produce static imagery, it can later be manipulated into a motion format!

Last night at the IPA, a film I created the titles and graphics for (on behalf of MC) in collaboration with The Ideas Foundation was released into the wild. The goal of the film was to shine a light on the state of diversity currently present in UK advertising, while starting a discussion into the ways in which we might be able to improve it.

Attendants ranged from Robin Wight (President of Engine), Jonathan Akwue (Engine Partner), John Hegarty (Founder BBH), Trevor Beattie (Founder BMB), Magnus Djaba (CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi) and many more. The showing of the film was followed by a discussion on the subject of diversity in advertising and ranged from discussing the problems with unpaid internships and problems with class priority in jobs.
